Travel for the soul

The hospitality group Accor has, as part of a representative trend report, taken a close look at, amongst other things, the travel behaviour of Germans.
According to the report, the desire to travel remains as strong as ever. More than 76 per cent of those surveyed say they intend to go on holiday this year. It is not uncommon for people to have built up their travel funds during the two years of the pandemic, and the intention now is to use this money primarily to treat themselves to something special.
Beach holidays in the sun remain a highly popular choice (44 per cent). City breaks (25 per cent) are also very popular. ‘Nature’ as a destination is set to play a significant role in 2022, in line with the trend towards travelling more mindfully and within one’s own country. The desire to explore one’s own country has almost doubled within a few weeks. Whilst 9 per cent of domestic travellers were planning a holiday in their own country at the end of 2021, this figure had risen to 16 per cent by the start of 2022. Travellers are particularly drawn to the coast and the countryside.
Sustainability has become an essential factor in travel. The impact of travel on the climate is important to 86 per cent of travellers. Air travel is being planned less frequently due to higher prices and out of concern for the environment.
Travelling for wellbeing has taken on added significance as a result of the pandemic. ‘Leaving stress behind and boosting mental wellbeing’ is the stated aim for 62 per cent of those surveyed. According to Accor, mindful travel is even set to become a major trend for 2022. To ensure a thorough rest, just under two-thirds of Germans (65 per cent) are planning a longer holiday. “Being in a different place helps to clear your head and get your life back on track” is what 60 per cent of those surveyed hope for.
Since the pandemic, having a safe travel experience has become a priority for travellers. Respondents attach great importance to high hygiene standards (34 per cent), flexibility when booking (27 per cent), clear health and safety standards (31 per cent) and an increased range of contactless payment options (21 per cent).
“Current travel trends reflect the spirit of the times,” emphasises property specialist Hamid M. Farahmand. “After the long period of the pandemic, those seeking rest are increasingly looking for opportunities for regeneration, tranquillity and wellbeing. Social interaction is giving way to the individual experience. This trend is also evident in holiday accommodation. Demand for serviced holiday apartments is higher than ever. People want to enjoy their stay with peace of mind and excellent service.”
